About LG PH6700 Series

LG’s PH6700 series is a high-tech midrange plasma HDTV with a rather strange TV remote control. Overall, the HDTV offers a decent value. It has a large screen for the price and some extra features that make the $1,000 price worth it. However, for a plasma HDTV, the picture quality is not on par with other similar TVs. This can present a problem, but, for the low price, it is not a huge issue. Still, the large feature set does make up for this.

The TV features a very thin bezel and a sunken-in appearance, like that of a picture frame. The finish is a black brushed plastic, but it looks cheap versus premium, like their other TVs. The stand is also not much to look at, but the fact that it swivels makes up for this. However, the remote is where the most changes were made. It is a small wand, but it really looks like a large lollipop. It is a “smart” remote, which means that it has pointing and scrolling capabilities, along with an on-screen remote. This may or may not irritate users as they try to access the menu, which requires the on-screen remote.

Pros:

  • Smart TV suite
  • Active 3D technology
  • Built-in Wi-Fi
  • De-judder processing
  • Great shadow detail
  • Great color performance
  • Excellent audio
  • Motion remote is fun to use
  • Cable box control
  • Voice control remote
  • Excellent picture settings

Cons:

  • Poor black levels
  • Poor bright room performance
  • No 3D glasses

Bottom line:

This is an excellent larger-screen TV. If you need a mid-range HDTV, this is a good option as long as you don’t plan to use it in a bright room or one where the sun shines in at all times.

The Sharp LC-UQ17U: Are the Extra Features Worth It?

The Sharp LC-UQ17U is an advanced TV with many features and an almost retro TV remote control. The TV itself has 1080p resolution, but its extra features are supposed to make the picture look closer to 4K quality. It has a four-color screen and some extra technology that should make the picture look better, but this is hardly the truth.

The top and bottom bezel of this TV are silver, while the sides are black, which looks slick. However, the stand looks strange compared to the rest of the TV design. The TV does wall mount, which is an option to consider, as it looks better that way. The remote design is the same one Sharp has used for the previous four years. It is a long remote that is comfortable and has just the right amount of buttons, without being overwhelming.

Pros:

  • Good picture quality
  • Deep black levels
  • Excellent shadow detail
  • Looks good when wall mounted
  • Good remote design, although it’s old
  • Menu system makes sense
  • Active 3D and comes with glasses
  • Bluetooth connectivity

Cons:

  • Very high price tag for native 1080p resolution
  • Revelation engine adds artifacts
  • Color artifacts
  • Stand looks awkward
  • Smart TV interface is sluggish
  • Picture not so nice compared to the price

The bottom line is that the price is not worth it for the picture quality or the lack of 4K resolution. The TV performs just as well as TVs that are half the price with similar features. This means that instead of spending $2,000, you can spend under $1,000 for the same, if not better, features.

Introducing the Sharp LE650

The LE650 is an updated version of 2013’s LE640, and it even has the same TV remote control. Sharp changed the design of the TV drastically to allow for a slimmer bezel. This forced the speakers to be moved to face the rear. Overall, the TV looks good, and it offers a good picture and value for the features. It features Sharp’s Smart TV suite, which is easy to navigate and has a decent amount of apps. The TV is an entry-level model, but it does offer a decent set of features and settings.

The TV comes with a thin, black bezel. Its stand is also black, but it sits far down on it and appears to be squatting over it. The remote is the same as the 2012 model, with a few hot button additions. You can now access a few apps from the remote, using the programmable hot buttons. However, the remote still looks and feels the same as before. The remote does function well, but it is larger than most that come with newer model TVs.

Pros:

  • Better picture quality than comparable models
  • Good black levels
  • Accurate color
  • Good bright-room picture
  • Smart TV
  • Multiple picture settings

Cons:

  • Poor sound quality
  • Pricey

Bottom line, this TV is a good overall value compared to other similar devices. Its sound quality is subpar, but Sharp sacrificed it when they redesigned the bezel. In addition, they fixed the color uniformity issues that the previous model had. The TV might just be a basic model that lacks features such as 3D, but that does not make it less of a TV.

Stream TV’s Ultra-D

Imagine having a 3D television that does not need 3D glasses to display the image on it. Stream has done just that with a filter that fits over an HDTV. In the future, they plan to create a TV set that does just this, without the filter. Using the TV remote control, you could flip through cable channels and see everything in 3D.

As it stands, in the fall of 2014, the Ultra-D TVs are still just a prototype. However, Stream is working with TCL, BOE, Huawei, Toshiba, and Hisense to produce these TVs for the end of 2014 and Q1 of 2015. Each TV produced will have 4K resolution with 8 million pixels when viewing 2D content. Unfortunately, most streaming services do not offer 4K services yet, but Netflix is supposed to roll their service out in Q4 of 2014.

The 3D technology included within the new TVs will not require glasses. The 3D technology works more like a hologram than the current 3D technology. The new screens deflect the light from individual pixels, projecting them one meter in front of the screen. This makes it appear as if the image has real depth. This 3D technology looks more real and loses the cumbersome glasses.

Soon, another service available from Stream will be the seeQube box. It decodes streaming services, giving the ability to watch compressed 4K TV streams. It does this with the help of a 2.3 GHz quad-core processor and an Adreno 330 GPU. With these specifications, it can stream 4K over the same bandwidth as regular HD streaming. In addition, Stream expects to adapt the technology for new tablet and phone screens for 3D service.

Amazon Fire TV

Recently, Amazon made waves when they introduced their Fire TV streaming device to compete with Roku and Apple TV. Its box is similar in size to the Roku box and Apple TV, and it has a similar TV remote control. Its remote is simple to use, as is the interface, which makes this device highly competitive.

With the Amazon Fire TV, you have the ability to use streaming services from most apps other than Amazon Prime. However, Amazon services are preferred, and some major apps are missing from the service, such as Spotify and HBO Go. The app lineup for the Fire TV is impressive, but compared to other streaming devices, it does not offer as much.

Pros:

  • Kid-friendly platform
  • Simple setup
  • Easy to use remote
  • Large amount of playable games
  • Small profile box
  • Very accurate voice search

Cons:

  • Expensive price tag
  • Have to purchase a separate game controller
  • Voice search limited to Amazon services
  • Requires a Prime subscription
  • Power adapter takes up a lot of space

Overall, if you have an Amazon Prime account, having the Amazon TV is worth it, especially if you play a lot of games. With the Amazon TV, you can access many games from Amazon Prime, including Minecraft and The Walking Dead. However, if you are just a casual streaming TV user, it would be a better choice to purchase a less expensive streaming TV device. Even with it, you can still access streaming from Amazon Prime Instant.

Understanding Smart TV Technology

When you are in the market for a new TV, your only requirement may simply be that it has a good TV remote control. That’s a normal request from the average person. However, today’s TVs have a lot more to offer than just a great remote. There are different technologies being introduced every day — and one of those technologies is the Smart TV.

So, what is a Smart TV? In simple terms, it is a TV that can connect to the internet. Now, a Smart TV is not the kind of television that requires an HDMI cable to connect it to your laptop. A Smart TV has its own way of connecting to the internet. Some of these televisions have built-in WIFI functionality. Others require that you connect your TV directly to your router through an Ethernet port.

Once connected to the internet, you will find a wide range of options available. You can surf the web, check Facebook, watch some YouTube clips, and much more. Different manufacturers offer different features for their Smart TVs, and some are better than others. One thing that you are sure to find is the ability to stream videos, such as those offered by Netflix and other video-on-demand services.

Smart TV prices range from low to high. If internet access or streaming movies is important to you, then you may want to find a Smart TV to fit your needs — and if its great remote ever fails, Replacement Remotes is here to help.

The Samsung PNF8500 Series Delivers an Amazing Picture

Finding an awesome TV and a matching TV remote control may seem like an impossible challenge, especially with so many available models on the market. However, the Samsung PNF8500 series takes the guesswork out of the process. This television series delivers exactly what you would expect in the $2400 to $3100 price range.

This is an active 3-D, plasma television that offers a superb picture with a wonderful bright-room image. The details are in the shadows — literally! This TV series offers deep blacks and shadow detail that help create a beautiful image. The colors are accurate and uniform, giving you a smooth, crisp image that pops with details.

This TV series has an amazing remote that is packed with tons of features. It also comes equipped with 4 pairs of 3-D glasses. You can even operate this TV series by motion and voice commands! Samsung didn’t hold anything back when creating this series, as it offers the latest in Smart TV technology. Finally, the design is slim and sleek, making it a perfect fit for any interior design.

The biggest flaws with this TV series are the price and the power consumption. If you like living “green,” you may want to steer clear of this TV series — it consumes a lot more power than comparable LCD TVs. The price is also on the steep side, which means it is not a good fit for every budget.

Overall, this plasma TV series delivers more than what you might expect in terms of picture quality and features — but you can also expect to pay for these features and quality.

The Curious Curved TV: Sony KDL-S990A

This LED-based LCD HDTV is one of the first HDTVs with a curved screen. Its release price was $4,000, which is a lot to pay for a TV. Its TV remote control is very long, with few buttons. The curve of the TV is very slight, but Sony states it is noticeable for the viewers near the center of the viewing angle. Due to this gentle, subtle curve, the HDTV must be placed on a wide stand. In addition, the TV itself is quite wide.

Instead of using OLED technology, Sony uses what it knows: LED technology. The resolution is 1080p, not 4K like other curved TVs. For such an HDTV, it offers a unique sound system, with eight speakers facing multiple directions. The surround sound is impressive, compared to many flat panel devices. The remote itself is nothing special. It offers the usual numbered buttons and a central directional pad with buttons above you can program.

Pros:

  • Great sound system
  • Powerful video processing
  • Whole suite of Smart TV apps
  • Built in Wi-Fi
  • Great picture and color
  • Energy Star certified
  • Active 3D technology

Cons:

  • Expensive
  • Very large footprint
  • Very heavy at over 100 lbs.

Bottom Line:

This is a great curved HDTV, but very expensive. Within a year, curved HDTVs might drop in price and offer better or different options. If you can afford the TV and must have this technology now, go for it. Just expect better technology to follow. In the meantime, you will have a great functioning HDTV. Newest Smart TV: The Sony KDL

Sony’s newest Smart TVs come from the KDL series, which, along with their wedge shapes and two remotes, are a curiosity. An expensive one, at that. This new series of TVs are large and in charge with pricing upwards of $2,200 for a 55+ inch TV. However, even with the high price and strange design, Sony’s got something right.

This TV series offers an amazing picture for the price point, and almost no issues with picture quality. It performs well in a bright room, an issue that many plasma and LCD TVs have. The sound quality also hits high marks. The TV is strange, as it is wedge shaped, with the top being much thinner than the bottom. When looking at it from the front, you can’t tell. From the sides, the shape is blatantly different.

The TV remote is similar to other Sonys from last year. It offers a pleasing color array of buttons. All buttons were easy to press one-handed, and they were clearly marked. A new key was added allowing you to pull up thumbnails of videos and TV shows. The second remote is a touchpad clicker, which is optional.

Pros:

  • Great picture quality
  • Deep black levels and great bright-room image
  • Excellent video processing
  • Excellent sound
  • Great features within the Smart TV apps

Cons:

  • Expensive
  • Poor 3D quality

Bottom Line:

If you just aren’t that into a 3D picture and have the money, this TV is worth it. The picture is better than most LCDs that are the same size.

Sony STR-DN840: The Best Low-Budget AV Receiver

With a remote that challenges most remotes for AV receivers and TVs, the Sony STR-DN840 offers a lot for less than $450. If you can look over how clunky this receiver is, you will see a great value with a great brand name. This device hits all marks when it comes to price, performance and features.

This AV receiver offers wireless features that some of the competitors just cannot match. It comes with standard built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and AirPlay. No other receivers offer all three of these abilities at this price. Use your smart phone in place of the remote to turn the device on and select inputs. More advanced features and settings still require the button-packed remote. It does sit nicely in the hand, but many of the additional buttons just are not needed. Remember, less is sometimes more.

Pros:

  • Built-in Wi-Fi
  • Many streaming options
  • Six HDMI inputs
  • Great value for the price
  • Three digital audio inputs
  • DLNA compliant, supporting streaming services
  • 7.2 channel receiver

Cons:

  • Remote is too busy with all the buttons and functions
  • No MHL inputs
  • Sound quality is not as good as others
  • Device is bulky

Bottom Line:

If you can get past the large, bulky box, this AV receiver is the best value you will find for the price. It offers every feature you could ask for and great wireless connectivity. Many features included are only available at price points over $600. This makes it a great buy from a great electronics manufacturer.
