3 Things You Didn’t Know about Nielsen Ratings

You’ve heard about Nielsen Ratings, but how much do you really know about them and the company that records them, Nielsen Media Research? If you want to learn more, here are a few facts about Nielsen ratings, their long history, and the company responsible for them:

Nielsen Didn’t Start with TV Ratings

Nielsen Media Research wasn’t always Nielsen Media Research. When engineer Arthur C. Nielsen founded his company in 1923, it specialized in measuring the effectiveness of conveyor belts and turbine generators. The company switched to measuring consumer sales during The Depression, launching an index to measure retail store and drug sales in 1933.

Before TV, Nielsen Was Measuring Radio Ratings

In 1936, Nielsen acquired the rights to the Audimeter, a device which was able to record when a radio was turned on, and what it was tuned to. Using the data collected by the Audimeter, Nielsen launched its Radio Index in the U.S. in 1942. The Audimeter would also be the basis for the devices Nielsen would use to record TV ratings starting in the 1950s.

The Super Bowl Is the Reigning Nielsen Champion

The top three highest-rated TV broadcasts in the history of the Nielsen ratings are all Super Bowls – Super Bowl XLIX in 2015, Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014, and Super Bowl 50 (L) in 2016. Super Bowl XLIX drew an average of 114.4 million viewers, alone.

Is Time Running Out on TV’s Golden Age?

Critics and cultural commentators refer to the past 10 years as a golden age for television. Cable networks have helped advance the trend, using bigger budgets, and high quality scripts and performers to create works just as good as any Hollywood film. All things come to an end, and critics are wondering if quality TV will be just a click of the TV remote control away in the future.

All creative movements lose steam, over time, and in time the trend of amazing television will also dissipate. Artists may choose to find other online mediums to do great story telling, and traditional movie theaters may see a renaissance. Quality may diminish if the next generation of writers and performers are not as talented as the current stable of talent.

Right now, many young creative people are working independently, making video content for YouTube and other video sharing services. It is not impossible that, in the near future, this may supplant television as our primary entertainment medium, causing a talent drain away from the silver screen.

There’s no doubt that the last 10 years have been great for television. Shows like The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, and others have advanced scripted television to amazing heights. It remains to be seen if this creative momentum can continue into the future.

Make Commercial Time Count

Commercials make up a larger share of time per hour of programming than ever before. That can turn out to be beneficial, if instead of just flipping to another channel with your remote control during commercial breaks, you use that time to complete small tasks.

Commercial advertisements

Commercial advertisements make up about 14 minutes of each hour of broadcast television and more than 15 minutes of each hour on cable television. Commercial breaks are typically three to four minutes long. You can make those breaks productive by:

  • Managing your email inbox – Use the three to four minute breaks to manage your inbox, cleaning out emails that need deletion. If cleaning your inbox takes longer than three to four minutes, you can always come back to the task during the next break.
  • Make your grocery shopping list – Commercial breaks are a great time to plan out your grocery list. Jot down the items you need on a piece of paper, so you’re ready for your next trip. Like managing your inbox, it’s a task you can easily come back to during subsequent commercial breaks.
  • Dust your entertainment center – While the commercials are running, catch up on your cleaning by dusting your television and your entertainment center. Also, clean up your living room or television viewing room during breaks.

Throwing the Best Oscars Bash

Award season has arrived, and there’s no better way to celebrate all the glitz and glamour of the big awards shows like the Oscars and the Golden Globes than by hosting a viewing party. There’s more to hosting a great Oscar night party than just flipping the television on with your remote control and opening a bag of chips.

To host a truly memorable awards party, you need to create an atmosphere of fun and participation. Consider these tips for your awards night party:

  • Pick your winners – Give each person who attends your party a ballot and have them pick the winners. The attendee who gets the most correct choices wins a prize (or bragging rights, depending on your budget).
  • Snazz it up – Hollywood’s elite will be wearing their best, so invite your friends to do the same. Having everyone dress up for the event will add a posh feel to your viewing party.
  • Let the games begin – Make the awards party more fun by playing a few games. If it’s a drinking party, pick out a few words or names and have everyone take a drink when they’re said. If your party is a non-drinking affair, charades and other popular party games are fun for commercial breaks.
  • Have great snacks – In keeping with the movie theme, get a variety of gourmet popcorns for your friends to enjoy, or set up a popcorn popper in your kitchen or video room and make your own.
